Although not linked conceptually in the past, the more recent tendency to connect language, literacy, and culture gives us a richer picture of learning, especially for students whose identities are related to language, race, ethnicity, and immigrant status have traditionally had a low status in many societies. The Ph.D. program in Culture, Literacy, and Language (CLL) ushered in its first cohort of doctoral students in 2001. Our theoretical stance is also critical in that we emphasize the transformative functions of language and literacy, keeping in constant view their potential to effect social change and create more inclusive, democratic societies.
